Monica, what brand of watercolors do you use? I love the muted look to them. I have been enjoying playing around with watercolors. Do you ink first or after the watercoloring?
Loni: I use Winsor and Newton watercolors, Cotman and Artist's brands. I usually ink the drawing first, and then add the watercolor (I use pen and nib, and FW Acrylic Ink). For this illustration, however, I applied watercolors first, and then I used a black Prismacolor pencil to do the outline. :-)
What an inspiration this is! Yes, reach for the stars and you won't wind up with a fistful of dirt -- who said that? Ogilvy??? I forget. Anyway, this is adorable and wonderful.
Thanks Monica! I bought a little field kit of Windsor and Newton half pans. I really love them and want to do more stuff with them. I would like to get some more colors. That's interesting you use a pen and nib. I usually use a micron or prismacolor pen for my outlining, but find that many times the pen doesn't hold the weight of the ink and feathers a lot. I will have to try your technique sometime. Maybe ink and brush for me though would be more my style. Thanks for the info. Your work is beautiful!
SO cute. Reminds me of something I just heard on NPR--shooting stars aren't really stars. They're space dust, no bigger than a grain of sand, but magnified through our atmosphere. I had no idea!
Geat illo, and great concept.
ReplyDeleteThat would be cool. Just to pick them right out the sky. Lovely work.
