It's almost always the smallest dogs that tend to be the fiercest (or so they think! Ha!)

Summer | Verão

Ah, my favorite time of the year: summer. I love the long days, not having to wear layers upon layers of clothing, and whenever possible getting my feet wet. One of the things I miss most about Rio is being near the sea...
I was going to paint this little guy, but didn't have time. So here's the sketch, very loosely done with color pencil.

Ah, minha época favorita do ano: o verão. Adoro os dias longos, não ter que vestir camadas sobre camadas de roupa, e sempre que possível meter os pés dentro d'água. Uma das coisas que eu mais sinto falta do Rio é viver junto do mar...
Eu ia pintar esse carinha, mas não tive tempo. Então fica aqui só o desenho, colorido bem solto com lápis de cor.

Spotlight on Books and Illustrators

There are a lot of picture books, both new and old, that I'd like to talk about and share with you.  It's hard to know where to start, but the recent announcement of the winners of the Boston Globe -- Horn Book Awards gave me an idea: on the category of picture books, one of the Honor books selected was "Fred stays with me!" by Nancy Coffelt and illustrated by the very talented Tricia Tusa.

I feel in love with this book the first time I read it!  Tricia's lovely illustrations, carefully done in earth tones of brown and gold, with a few touches of red, adds tenderness and humor to a sensitive, well written story about divorce, the changes it brings into one little girl's life and the one constant friendly presence that helps her cope with it all.  It's a wonderful story, made all the more so thanks to Tricia's charming and touching artwork.

Tricia's most recent book is also a jewel: "In a blue room" by Jim Averbeck.  Again her illustrations complement the text perfectly, making this another worthy title for anyone's library.

Existem muitos livros infantis, novos e antigos, que eu gostaria de comentar e partilhar com vocês.  É difícil saber por onder começar, mas o anúncio dos vencedores do Prêmio Boston Globe -- Horn Book me deu uma idéia: na categoria de "picture books" um dos livros selecionados para receber Menção Honrosa foi "Fred stays with me!" de Nancy Coffelt, ilustrado pela talentosa Tricia Tusa.

Eu me apaixonei por este livro na primeira leitura!  As lindas ilustrações, cuidadosamente feitas em tons marrons e dourados com toques de vermelho, adiciona ternura e humor a uma estória sensível e bem escrita sobre o divórcio, o seu efeito na vida de uma menina e a presença constante de um amigo que a ajuda a lidar com tudo.  É um livro maravilhoso, em grande parte devido as ilustrações charmosas e tocantes da Tricia.

Seu mais recente livro, "In a blue room" escrito por Jim Averbeck também é uma jóia.  Mais uma vez, suas ilustrações complementam o texto perfeitamente, e é mais um livro digno de qualquer coleção.

Welcome to my new blog! I've decided to change the blog from iWeb to Blogger. I'll keep my website on iWeb, but I felt I needed a different format for the blog.
