Illustration Friday | Legendary

Balto is the legendary dog who led a team of huskies through a blizzard in 1925 to deliver medicine to halt a diphtheria epidemic in Nome, Alaska. In Central Park in New York there's a beautiful sculpture honoring this amazing dog. It was one of my favorite spots in the park when I lived in New York. Once my husband and I went there after a blizzard when the park, and the statue, were covered in snow. I don't like winter, but that was just perfect :-)

  5. I just watched the animated movie about Balto recently (it came out a while back)--what an amazing story.

Your drawing is lovely. The smile on the little girl's face is the best. Your little details just make the whole piece sing.

  17. Love your idea and a great dog. I wish he wasn't so close in color and tone to the background so it would be easier to see him.

  22. Pure enchantment, your painting! You know, I lived in/near NYC for 17 years, and I never went to see the Balto statue! How I regret that. I know the story, and what a tremendous one it is. When we first moved to Tokyo, one of the first things I set out to see was the statue of Hachiko at Shibuya station. Hachiko is a legendary dog who faithfully waited at the train station for his master every day, even for years after his master died until he eventually died himself. The story always makes me cry.
